School Election

NJ School Board Elections Chronological Guide

  • February 29: Last day to to file a petition to run for School Board. All nominating petitions must be filed with the Secretary of the Board of Education before 4:00 p.m.
  • March 9: The Secretary of the Board of Education shall perform the drawing of names for ballot positions.
  • March 29: Last day to register to vote for the School Election
  • April 5: On or before this date, applications for appointment of challengers for school elections shall be filed with the County Board of Elections.
  • April 12: Last day to receive mail applications for mail-in ballots
  • April 13: Mailing of Sample Ballots.
    Sample Ballots shall be mailed to all registered voters.
  • April 18: A Mail-In Ballot Voter, who fails to apply by mail 7 days prior to the election, may apply in person to the County Clerk for a Mail-In Ballot on any day up to 3:00 PM the day before the election.
  • April 19: School Board Election Day. Polls must be open between 5 pm and 9 pm, and may be open any additional time between the hours of 7 am and 9 pm as designated by each Board of Education.
  • May 4: Recount Application Deadline.
    Application for recount of votes cast for a candidate at the School Board Election shall be made on or before this date.

Primary Election

NJ Primary Elections Chronological Guide

  • April 4: Petition filing deadline for Primary Election.
  • April 13: Last day to file Change of Party Affiliation declaration form for the Primary Election.
  • May 17: Last day to register to vote in the June Primary Election. Board of Elections office open until 9 p.m.
    Last day to file a change of residence application.
  • May 24: On or before this date, applications for appointment of challengers for Primary Election shall be filed with the County Board of Elections.
  • May 31: Last day to apply for a Vote by Mail (formerly civilian absentee ballot) application by mail (for the Primary Election)
  • June 1: Mailing of sample ballots for Primary Election.
  • June 3: A qualified overseas voter who wishes to receive a faxed federal ballot for the Primary Election, must apply to the county clerk no later than the fourth day before the Primary Election.
  • June 6: A Mail-in Ballot Voter, who fails to apply by mail 7 days prior to the election, may apply in person to the County Clerk for a Mail-in Ballot on any day up to 3:00 p.m. the day before the election.
  • June 7: Primary Election Day. Polls open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • June 22: Recount application deadline for Primary Election.

General Election

  • August 15: Drawing of ballot position for General Election candidates.
  • October 18: Last day to register to vote in the November General Election. Board of Elections office open until 9 p.m.
    Last day to file a change of residence application.
